Kali is a complete, high tech, ambidextrous, very individualized Filipino Martial Art, that I have learned directly from Guro Dan Inosanto and his students. It has 12 main areas with an emphasis on weaponry, ranging from single stick or sword, double stick, stick and dagger, double or solo dagger, staff, empty hand Filipino boxing (Panatukan), kicking (Sikaran), grappling (Dumog), the healing arts and even rhythm training, flexible weapons like a scarf or sarong, and much more. Weapons are used to develop coordination, and lighting fast reflexes necessary in combat when fighting single or multiple attackers. There are no forms. The use of fun progressive flow drills can be done with one or multiple training partners, solo, or just using your imagination. These drills and can be practiced slow or ramped up for a heavy cardio workout. Kali is ultimately a military martial art that was used to defend against the Spanish occupation of the Philippians for over 300 years. And, it is has been in the USA since the 1500's.
Silat, as taught to me by Guro Dan Inosanto is an amazing individualized self defense system from the ancient Madjapahit Empire. These arts are thought to be black magic and are still highly secretive in some areas of South East Asia. I like to think of Silat as the Jazz of the Martial Arts. It involves a system of off balancing that I also see in my drumming system. A weigh shift takes place in which you can literally implode the structure of the body making for devastating throws and breaks. Silat is also weapon based with the use of many distinctly different blades. The blade makes Silat an anti-grappling art. Ballistic breaking also occurs before your opponent hits the ground. Silat is an incredible self defense system which employs taking out the vision, air ways, striking and mobility system of your opponent as quickly as possible. Ironically these arts are also incredibly healing and healthy for the body when practiced regularly. Silat has dramatically transformed my body, sense of balance, agility, and overall athletic performance. It is quite literally a fountain of youth! What makes Guro Dan's Silat program unique is that he uses many South East Asian Boxing systems as the set up for performing the Silat techniques. This includes the arts of Muay Thai and Panatuken.

"Early this century, research established that neurogenesis ( the growth of new neurons) in the brain continued throughout adult life. This was a very positive discovery as it was previously thought that it stopped late in childhood. The three factors that were shown to initiate neurogenesis were novelty, an enriching environment, and physical exercise. These experiences initiate a cascade of gene expression that generate new neurons in the brain throughout the life cycle. Kali and Silat are a perfect blend of these kinds of experiences."
